A small painted theater: a clockwork understudy stands in the wings holding a book, candles lit beside her, while a single dancer performs on the lamplit stage to empty seats

The Understudy

A tiny clockwork theater performs its tragedy every night, whether or not you come.

You are its audience of one. The play is performed while the app is closed, fully and honestly: no check-ins, no streaks, no decay, no punishment for living your life. Come back after an evening or a week; the house will account for every night you missed, and it will not scold you.

No advertisements, ever. No accounts and no servers. Nothing counted, badged, or teased. One optional notification, off by default. The Box Office sells keepsakes and further correspondence from the house; nothing you can buy is required to reach anything, including the endings.

Opening night 7 October, on iPhone. The curtain rises at eight.

One disclosure: the theater's paintings and engravings are AI-generated images, art-directed piece by piece by the developer. Every word, every note of the score, the design, and all of the code are human-made.
